Description

The Alexandra Hotel is a public house built in 1911. It features red brick construction with painted stone and terracotta decorations, and a slate roof with red brick chimneys. The building has a rectilinear plan situated on a corner site, with single-storey extensions to the right and rear. It has two storeys and five windows. On the left side, there is a full-height octagonal bay, while the central bay projects forward and includes an entrance beneath a segmental pediment. Above the entrance, there is a window with a red terracotta plaque, and a segmental gablet above it contains another red terracotta plaque with the date 'AD 1911'. The ground floor features pilasters with floral designs at each corner, linked by a cornice, while the first floor is banded with painted stone. The sash windows on the ground floor are etched, and the attached single-storey range to the right has a bay window with the word 'Billiards' etched on the glass. The left return has an entrance to the former outdoor department.

Inside, the entrance lobby has a central door set in a painted wooden screen, and the hall is decorated with a dado of green and cream glazed tiles featuring multi-coloured Art-Nouveau motifs in coloured glass. The rooms have painted wooden door surrounds with segmental pediments, and the doors feature etched glass panels labeled 'Tap Room', 'Smoke Room', 'Bar Parlour', and others. Most rooms include fixed upholstered seating, lobby screens with coloured glass, and original fireplaces, some of which have Art-Nouveau style chimneypieces. The bar parlour has a glazed screen, while the billiard room showcases exposed roof timbers and a painted glass skylight. The bar back and outdoor department have been altered. The Alexandra Hotel is a notable example of an early 20th-century public house that retains an elaborate interior with many original features.
