Description
The boundary stone, dating from 1853, is made of ashlar and has a triangular plan. It is inscribed with "SALFORD/ PRESTWICH" and features the words "BOUNDARY STONE" on its chamfered top. This stone marks the boundary along Singleton Brook between Prestwich, which is in Bury, and Salford. It was likely erected in 1853, the year when the townships of Broughton, Pendleton, and Salford were united to create the new County Borough of Salford. The stone is part of a group that includes other boundary stones located on Bury Old Road and Singleton Road. The boundary stone is notable as a well-preserved example of a mid-19th century boundary marker and signifies an important change in local government boundaries.
