Description
The Sturgeon family grave slab, made of sandstone, is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. It features a double-line margin and a curved inscription in Gothic script at the top that reads "IN MEMORY OF." Below this, in broad plain capitals, the slab states "WILLIAM STURGEON/ THE ELECTRICIAN (italicised)/ BORN 1783: - DIED 1850/ AGED 67 YEARS." There are additional inscriptions below for Mary Sturgeon, his widow (died 1867), and for Luke Brierley of Manchester (1822-1900) and his wife Ellen (died 1884), who was the Sturgeons' adopted daughter.
