Description
Bents Farmhouse and the adjoining barn is a late 18th century laithe house, although it likely has an earlier origin. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan with two bays and two storeys, with the barn attached to the right side.
The central door and porch are notable for their obtuse-angled lintels and heavily chamfered surrounds. The porch has a coped gable with the date 1727 carved into one of the jamb stones. To the left of the door, there is a five-light chamfered mullion and transom window, while to the right, there is a four-light mullion window. On the first floor, there are two three-light windows, all of which have hoodmoulds. Additionally, there is a central blind arched light at first floor level. The building features quoins, coped gables with kneelers, and chimney stacks at both the gable and ridge.
The rear of the farmhouse has similar three and four-light windows and doors, some of which are blocked, with square-cut surrounds. The barn, which is partly hidden by a timber lean-to addition, has opposed segmental-arched cart entries with small arched lintel lights above. It also features dressed pitching holes on either side and slit ventilators. The right gable of the barn is rendered, and it has queen-post roof trusses. A parallel single-storey range adjoins the rear of the barn and is detailed in a similar manner.
