Description

The Church of St Gabriel War Memorial, dedicated in 1921 and re-dedicated in 1947, is located in the churchyard immediately outside the west window of St Gabriel's Church in Middleton Junction. It consists of a rectangular stone column raised on a pedestal and plinth, topped with a stylised Celtic cross. The cross features a recessed panel with a downward-pointing broadsword carved in relief, surrounded by a laurel wreath that has a small Lancashire rose at its center. The base of the cross is supported by scroll brackets on either side, with the date 1914 displayed above a festoon on the front panel.

The front of the pedestal is divided into three recessed panels; the central panel, which is twice the width of the outer panels, contains a dedication that reads: "ERECTED / IN HONOURED MEMORY / OF / THE BRAVE MEN FROM / S.GABRIEL’S PARISH / WHO SACRIFICED / THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WARS / + / “THEIR NAMES LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE.” The flanking panels are inscribed with "1939 / 1945" and list the names of 14 individuals who died during the Second World War. The names of the 131 fallen from the First World War are recorded on the side panels of the pedestal and on the plinth. Additionally, the names of 26 fallen from the Second World War are inscribed in two panels on the plinth, with the front panel on the top step also marked "1939 / 1945." All names are recorded by initial and surname, except for one woman, Martha Scott.
