Description
The Wick War Memorial is a First World War memorial dating from around 1920, which was altered following the Second World War. It is constructed of stone and is located in the churchyard of St Mary's Church, next to the lychgate and a medieval cross.
The memorial features a Latin cross atop a substantial tapering column with an intricately carved capital, an octagonal plinth, and a three-stepped octagonal base. On the front of the cross, there is a relief-carved Sword of Sacrifice.
The main inscription on the plinth reads on the west face: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THE HONOUR AND LIBERTY OF THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 R.I.P."
On the north-west face, there are six names followed by "1939-1945" and one name. The south-west face also has six names followed by "1939-1945" and one name.
On the upper step of the base, on the north-west, north, and south-west faces, the inscription reads: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
