Description
The former coach house to Number 38, located on Manchester Road, dates from around 1820, although it may be older due to evidence of two phases of construction. It is built of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and has a five-window range. The ground floor is arcaded, with three segmentally-arched carriage entrances; a wide central entrance is flanked by narrower arches on each side. The inner entrances are similarly designed with round arches. Above, there are five round-arched four-pane sash windows. The front wall has been refronted, likely in the early 19th century. The rear elevation includes two round-arched openings on the ground floor and four-pane sash windows above, as well as a loading door with a hoist in the gable wall. Access to the upper room is via a staircase in the arcade. Inside, there are remains of an ornate plaster panelled ceiling with decorative bosses, which may relate to its reputed use as a ballroom, though this has been altered by inserted cross beams from its later use as a leather works.
