Description
Chadderton Mill is a cotton doubling mill that was steam powered and built in 1885 by P.S. Stott for the Chadderton Mill Company Ltd. The card shed was extended with an additional storey in 1901, and a new office block was constructed in 1906, with further extensions made in 1911, 1920, and 1936. The mill features a cast-iron and steel frame with brick cladding.
The exterior consists of five storeys with a wide rectangular plan of 18 bays, including nine bay return elevations and stair towers at the corners. It has tall brick arched windows, and the engine house projects from the center of the south elevation, showcasing two round-arched windows and the date in a segmental pediment in the parapet. A chimney is located alongside. There is a glazed-roofed porch over the entrance and loading area on the west elevation.
A stair and sprinkler tower projects from the center of the north elevation, displaying the mill's name in white brick lettering. In the western angle, the office block added in 1920 is two storeys high with a three-window range and a doorway to the right, featuring leaded lights in the windows. An eastward extension, likely the card room, has hipped longitudinal roof ridges.
Chadderton Mill is a notable example of earlier fire-proof construction, featuring brick arches supported by cast-iron columns and steel beams, with partially load-bearing walls. Its planning reflects the increased width made possible by advancements in construction techniques.
