Description

The Church of St Luke is a Grade II listed church built in 1882 by Stott and Sons. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof and features a tall nave and chancel under a continuous roof. The design includes a west baptistry flanked by porches and low aisles, although the intended north-west tower and chapterhouse, along with a vaulted ceiling, were never completed. This church is in the Gothic revival style, with a 5-bay nave and aisles, a projecting plinth, and corbelled eaves. It has angled corner buttresses and two flying buttresses on each side, along with three (or four on the north) 2-light aisle windows. The principal windows at clerestory level are 3-light with geometrical tracery, and the gables are coped with finials. A brick lean-to addition serves as a replacement for the organ chamber that was never built. The east end features three 2-light windows set under an arched recess.

Inside, the chancel is faced with ashlar, while the nave is finished in terra-cotta. The nave arcade arches are moulded terracotta on quatrefoil stone columns. The roof has king-post trusses, although a ceiling was inserted in the 20th century. Notable interior elements include a stone font with a richly carved cover and timber fittings. The church contains good stained glass, much of which is by J. B. Capronnier, including the east window. A plaque in the chancel commemorates Edward Platt, a local mill owner who funded the chancel. The combination of the lofty nave and chancel with rich detailing creates an unusual and interesting interior.
