Description
Harpurhey Baths and Laundry is a public baths and laundry building constructed between 1909 and 1910. It features red brick and buff terracotta with slate roofs and has a large irregular plan. The entrance and office block is located at the north-west corner, with a swimming pool behind it and a former laundry area to the south, which includes a tall chimney.
The two-and-a-half storey entrance block is designed in a neo-Baroque style and consists of five bays. It has an orange terracotta plinth, buff terracotta pilasters, and a mutule cornice. The second and fourth bays feature keyed round-headed arched doorways with arched cornices above, and attic storeys with semi-circular open pediments. The ground floor has round-headed windows (with altered glazing), while the first floor has three-light sashes, except for a one-light sash in the center. The attics have segmental-headed sashes, all with keyed terracotta surrounds, and the sashes have glazing bars only in the upper leaves. The building has a hipped roof and side-wall chimneys with terracotta bands.
The left return wall is in a similar but simpler style and connects to the gable end of the swimming hall, which features a glazed roof louvre. Inside, there is much original fitting and decoration in the Art Nouveau style, including glazed tiling in the entrance hall and staircase, a copper commemoration plaque, and a galleried swimming pool hall with plunge-bath cubicles on the gallery. Most of these cubicles retain original stained glass panels and some still have their original baths.
