Description
Crofters House, also known as the Manchester and District Dogs' Home, is a house dating from around 1810 that has been altered. It features painted roughcast walls and a slate roof, with a double-depth, double-fronted layout. The building is two storeys high and has three symmetrical windows.
On the ground floor, there is a central doorway accessed by two steps, which has a rusticated surround and a panelled glazed door. This doorway is flanked by two large semicircular bow windows that are supported by Tuscan pilasters. These windows have sashes with glazing bars and are topped with plain friezes and cornices that connect to a straight section above, which protects the doorway.
The first floor has four-pane sashed windows, all with raised sills and lintels that are scored to resemble voussoirs. The central window is narrower and has a plain surround, indicating it may have been a former doorway, with a brick sill suggesting that the roofs of the bows and doorway might have been used as a balcony in the past. The house features a moulded gutter cornice, rebuilt gable chimneys, and a small skylight in the roof.
Although the interior has been much altered, it is said to retain a plain but good original staircase.
