Description
This is a GPO pillar box, known as a "Hexagonal Penfold," dating from between 1859 and 1879. It is made of cast iron and has a hexagonal shape, standing approximately 2 meters high. The base is moulded and features the inscription "COCHRANE / & CO / DUDLEY." The door is semi-hexagonal and adorned with the ornamental monogram "VR." There is a band with a posting slot at the front and the word "POST" on the sides. The frieze displays the Royal Arms, and it has a moulded cornice with a band of large beads. The shallow ogee cap is decorated with acanthus leaves and topped with a ball-flower finial. This pillar box is notable for being the only surviving free-standing Victorian pillar box in the city.
