Description

Elliot House is a former school board office built in 1878 by Royle and Bennett, with extensions added in 1904 and 1914. The building features a sandstone ashlar ground floor, red brick with sandstone dressings, and red terracotta above, topped with a slate roof. It has a large rectangular plan situated at the end of a block and is designed in the Queen Anne style.

The structure consists of three storeys, cellars, and an attic, with an eight-window facade facing Deansgate, which is stylistically divided into two sections of three and five windows. The left section features a large shaped gable, pilastered upper floors with moulded sill-bands, and sash windows with keystones. The first-floor windows have moulded terracotta panels above and below. The right section includes a doorway in the first bay with a moulded architrave, cornice, and a gablet that contains a three-light overlight. The first-floor windows here also have moulded architraves and floating pediments, while the second floor is pilastered with windows similar to those on the left side, topped by a balustraded parapet above the cornice.

Notably, the left corner displays a shaped window within a richly decorated aedicule featuring putti, and above it is a moulded corbel supporting an oriel with rounded corners. This oriel has a cross-window with an ornamented pediment on the first floor, a narrow sash on the second floor, and a pedimented upstand above the parapet. Most windows have glazing bars only in the upper leaf. The building is also adorned with various tall chimneys and has long returned sides that maintain a similar alternating style.
