Description

The former entrance to Deansgate Goods Station, including numbers 223 to 233, is an entrance structure built in 1899. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings. The building features a screen wall with seven bays of blank arcading, separated by large pilasters. It has stone bands, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. In the left bay, there is the former station entrance, which now serves as pedestrian access to a car park. This entrance has twin segmental vaults leading to a covered way that is set at an angle and topped by a large blind segmental arch made of four moulded brick rings, featuring a pedimented stone keyblock and radiating stone blocks of a similar design. There are splayed pilasters on either side of the covered way, which is now blocked on the right side. The tympanum above the entrance displays raised block lettering that reads "L.N.E.R. GOODS DEPOT." The remaining six bays, including a half-bay to the right of the entrance, have blank arches of similar design, with 20th-century shop fronts at the ground floor. Each arch's tympanum features raised lettering indicating the destinations of the railway. This structure forms a group with numbers 235 to 291, which continue the architectural line to the right.
