Description

This building is a row of seven small dwellings, likely originally used for domestic industry, with shops on the ground floor. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of brown brick in Flemish bond and features slate roofs on two levels. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with No. 50 forming a cross-wing at the right-hand end, at the corner of Hilton Street.

The row consists of three low storeys, with one window for each house, except for No. 50, which is taller and presents its gable end to Port Street, lacking a window above the ground floor. Each dwelling has a mid-19th century pilastered shopfront at the ground level, with an entrance to the left and a wooden-framed window, mostly consisting of six large panes. All houses, except No. 50, feature a segmental-headed sash window on the first floor (12-paned, except for No. 52 which has a 4-paned window) and a shorter 12-pane sash on the second floor (with 4 panes in the upper leaf and 8 in the lower), while No. 54 has a 6-light horizontal-sliding sash, likely used by a fustian weaver.

The row has various ridge chimneys. The return side of No. 50, facing Hilton Street, includes a basement with three openings, protected by remnants of railings. It has three tall segmental-headed windows at the ground floor with 4-pane fixed glazing, two segmental-headed sashes and four tie-plates on the first floor, and two square-headed 12-pane sashes on the second floor, with the top of the wall apparently rebuilt. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected.
