Description
MANCHESTER
SJ8498SE PORT STREET 698-1/29/298 (South side) 20/06/88 Nos.50 TO 62 (Even)
GV II
Row of 7 small dwellings, probably formerly for domestic industry, with shops at ground floor. Late C18 or early C19; altered. Brown brick in Flemish bond, slate roofs on 2 levels. Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted but with No.50 forming a cross-wing at the right-hand end (Hilton Street corner). Three low storeys, one window to each house, except No.50 which is higher, presents its gable end to Port Street and has no window above ground floor. Each has a mid C19 pilastered shopfront at ground floor, with entrance to left and wooden-framed window (mostly of 6 large panes); except No.50, each has a segmental-headed sash at 1st floor (12-paned except No.52 which is 4-paned), and a shorter 12-pane sash at 2nd floor (4 panes in the upper leaf and 8 in the lower), except No.54 which has a 6-light horizontal-sliding sash (probably for fustian weaver). Various ridge chimneys. Return side of No.50, to Hilton Street, has a basement with 3 openings, the basement area protected by remains of railings, 3 tall segmental-headed windows at ground floor (with 4-pane fixed glazing), 2 segmental-headed sashes and 4 tie-plates at 1st floor, and 2 square-headed 12-pane sashes at 2nd floor (and top of wall apparently rebuilt). Rear and interior not inspected.
