Description

This is a detached block of schoolroom, now used partly as a laundry and partly as a schoolroom, built in 1878 by Alfred Waterhouse. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with a slate roof and has a rectangular plan oriented on a north-south axis, along with a smaller parallel range at the rear that projects at the north end. The building is designed in the Perpendicular style and is a single storey, although it has been altered internally to include an upper floor.

The facade features six bays with buttresses and a sill-band running around the building. The first bay has a gabled porch with a moulded Tudor-arched doorway and panelled double doors accessed by five steps. There is an extruded chimney stack on the second bay that tapers to a tall octagonal chimney. The other bays have transomed 3-light windows with cusped lights. Moulded corbels and a cornice are present, along with large transomed 4-light windows in each gable wall that feature Perpendicular tracery and hoodmoulds, as well as small 2-light windows above these. The gables are coped and topped with crocket finials. The rear wing includes two 3-light windows in the gable wall and a porch in the angle.

Inside, the upper floor has been inserted at transom level, and there are brattished wallplates along with an arch-braced kingpost roof that includes windbraces.
