Description
The former warehouse and offices of Old Mill, Decker Mill, and New Mill is an office and warehouse range that served adjacent cotton spinning mills, built around 1806. The structure is made of brick and has a slate roof. Originally, it was a four-storey building with a symmetrical design featuring ten-window ranges on each side of a central entrance. However, the left-hand range, which extended to New Mill, has been reduced in height to two storeys, while the right-hand range remains four storeys tall. The central entrance provided main access to the courtyard and canal basin for the Old Mill, Decker Mill, and New Mill. It features a stone voussoir arch with tripartite windows in the upper storeys above. Other windows have been renewed in their original openings with cambered brick heads. On the rear elevation, there is an oriel window for the office to the south of the entrance arch. This building was part of Adam and George Murray's textile works, established on this site in 1798, which expanded to create a courtyard linking three spinning mills with warehouse and office blocks around it. It is recognized as an important component of this textile working site and represents an early example of industrial architecture.
