Description
Little Mill is a cotton spinning mill located in Ancoats, Manchester. It was built in 1908 to utilize mains electricity as its primary power source, replacing an earlier mill from around 1820. The structure is made of brick, with an internal framework of cast iron, steel, and concrete. It stands five storeys tall and features ten bays by four bays, with an entrance, stair, and privy tower that projects at the northwest corner, along with a tower for electric motors extending towards the northeast. The mill has wide segmentally arched windows, with three windows per bay along the length, and includes simplified detailing such as a cornice above the fourth storey and panelled angle pilasters on the tower, which is topped with a swept segmental parapet. Little Mill is a significant part of Murray's Mills and is notable for being the earliest mill in Greater Manchester designed to use mains electricity.
