Description
Union Street Bridge is a towpath and public road bridge over the Rochdale Canal, built in the later 19th century, rebuilt in 1903, and recently restored. It is a roving or turn-over bridge made of cast iron and brick, featuring sandstone terminal piers. The bridge crosses the canal diagonally and has cast-iron panelled parapets. On the south side, there is a tow-path deck with a similar but lower parapet, and a spiral ramp at the south end with brick sides and a cobbled deck that leads down to the towpath tunnel. This bridge replaced an earlier swivel bridge, which in turn replaced a drawbridge built with the canal in 1804. It is included for its group value.
