Description
60 and 62 Spring Gardens is a former manufacturers' warehouse, later used as an insurance office, built in 1882 by Alfred Waterhouse for Gartside & Co. The building is made of sandstone ashlar and has a slate roof. It is situated on a corner site with a rectangular plan and narrow chamfered corners, designed in a Renaissance style.
The structure has four storeys and an attic, featuring seven bays plus the corners. The ground floor is rusticated with a cornice, string-courses, and sill-bands on the upper floors. A modillioned main cornice and a panelled parapet are interrupted by pedimented attic dormers. An octagonal corner turret with domed caps and slender apex lanterns adds to the design.
The ground floor includes an arcade of round-headed arches with stepped voussoirs, with doorways in the three central arches and 20th-century plate-glass glazing in the others, along with a similar doorway in the chamfered corner. The upper floors have 2-light mullioned windows, with carved panels between the windows on the first and second floors and raised bracketed sills on the third floor. Single-light windows are located at the corners, including the first stage of the turrets. The attic dormers feature single-light windows in moulded architraves with scrolled consoles and pedimented tops. The turrets have small 2-light mullioned windows on the upper stage. The left return facing Fountain Street matches the main style and includes a loading bay doorway at the far end. The interior has not been inspected.
