Description

41 Spring Gardens is a former bank building, now used as offices, completed in 1890. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse for the National Provincial Bank. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with moulded ridge stacks. It occupies a corner site, with its facade curving around to York Street.

In the French Renaissance style, the building stands three storeys high with an attic and has an 11-window range, primarily featuring sash windows with margin glazing set in moulded architraves, which have curved pediments on the first floor. The ground floor has 20th-century windows. Doric pilasters mark the bays on the ground floor and support a frieze, above which rise Ionic pilasters with carved pedestals. These support an entablature featuring a cushion frieze and a row of paired sash dormers with elaborate gables linked by arches.

To the far right, a two-storey gable is dated 1890 and marks the main entrance, which has paired doorways on the ground floor adorned with ornamental corbels, columns, and balconies above. There is also a similar single-bay entrance on York Street. The building forms a group with Nos. 43 and 45, as well as No. 47 to the right.
