Description
Hartley Hall is a former Methodist college that later served as a hall of residence for the Royal Northern College of Music. It was built between 1879 and 1906 and features a large, irregular plan formed by the original block at the corner of Gowan Road and several additions to the north. The building is constructed of brick with red terracotta and stone dressings, topped with slate roofs.
The architecture is eclectic, incorporating Gothic and Elizabethan elements. It stands two storeys high with an attic and basement, and includes a tower. The original block is made of stock brick and features an arcaded range of windows with pointed arched heads, a doorway with a gabled porch and steps, and corbel-table eaves.
An addition from 1896 on the right side includes buttresses, gables, and mullion-and-transom windows, some with double transoms. It has a projecting gabled bay with a stone-surrounded doorway and a square tower with an octagonal clock turret and cupola. The forecourt is enclosed by wrought-iron railings with two single gates and a pair of double gates in the center, featuring open-work standards topped by lamp brackets and a scrolled overthrow with an escutcheon.
To the right, the block added between 1903 and 1906 is made of red brick with stone dressings and a green slate roof, designed in an Elizabethan style. It is symmetrical, with projecting gabled wings and stone mullion-and-transom windows, two of which break the eaves. There are single-storey covered ways on both sides. The chapel, located to the right, is built with similar materials and is designed in the Perpendicular style, featuring a nave and two side chapels, flying buttresses, and a large traceried east window. The rear of the building has all windows fitted with uPVC glazing.
