Description

The building is a Christian Science church, later used as offices, constructed in 1903 and designed by Edgar Wood. It is a building of group value, reflecting its high architectural and historical significance.

The church is built of red brick with some rendered sections, and has a steeply pitched tiled roof to the main range, although the wings have been re-roofed with slate. The building has an unusual Y-shaped plan, comprised of a tall, narrow main range set back and at right angles to the street, with lower, splayed wings projecting to the front. A cylindrical turret is positioned in the angle between the gable of the main range and the right wing. The design displays an Expressionist style with Art Nouveau detailing.

The gable of the main range is primarily rendered and features a wide semicircular-headed doorway with splayed sandstone sides and a multiply-stepped brick head. Above the doorway is a cruciform window feature, incorporating an arched central light and two-light arms, all within a stone surround, with a plain stone pilaster rising through the apex. The turret, rising to eaves level, has a ground floor window with two small rectangular lights and a series of interrupted lights under the eaves of a conical roof. A tall rectangular chimney rises to the rear of the turret. The side wall of the main range (not visible from the front) features low buttresses, two small four-light windows, and six tall gabled dormers. An unusual porch or porte cochere is attached to the end of this range.

The projecting wings differ in design; the wing on the left has a gabled porch, a tall canted window breaking through the eaves with transomed lights and a high parapet, and low three-light windows under the eaves. The wing on the right has five buttressed bays with a door in the first bay, simplified Diocletian windows in the other bays, and a gable wall with diagonal chimney flues flanked by Diocletian windows. A screen attached to the west corner of the gable has a round-headed entrance archway and a stone panel lettered "FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST," leading to a drive to the porch attached to the west side of the main range.

The interior has not been inspected.
