Description

This is a pair of houses located at 114 and 116 Buckingham Crescent in Manchester, built around 1845 and altered since. The houses are constructed of stucco and roughcast on brick, topped with a slate roof, and are designed in an H-plan. They are two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows in a 1:2:1 configuration, featuring gabled wings that project from the main structure.

The buildings have a plinth, a band at the first floor, and an eaves band. The ground floor of the wings includes canted bay windows, with the bay at No. 116 having sash windows with glazing bars and margin panes. The main range has large French windows on the ground floor, which have been altered, and the one at No. 116 was damaged at the time of the survey. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows, with the left window at No. 116 also damaged.

The returned sides of the houses have small rectangular porches; the porch at No. 116 has a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a pedimented gable, along with a round-headed doorway in the front and a round-headed window in the gable end. The porch at No. 114 has been altered. Both houses have projected side wings and similar window designs. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. Historically, No. 114 was the home of Sylvia Pankhurst, a leader of the suffragette movement, around 1890. At the time of the survey, No. 116 was unoccupied.
