Description

The memorial to the Slagg family, located to the west of the Church of St Mary and 12 meters northwest of the memorial to John Brooks, was created between 1875 and 1880 by Alfred Waterhouse. This tomb chest is made of dressed sandstone and pink polished granite, designed in the Venetian Gothic style. It features a broad rectangular base and a chest in Gothic style, adorned with eight polished pink granite colonettes that frame three yellow sandstone panels on each side and one at each end. The design includes a cavetto frieze with eroded foliation and a hipped canopy that has three bands of weathering, topped with a ridge formed by the shaft of a cross, which has an overlaid wreath at the west end. The panels are sunk with cusped diamonds, some of which contain inscriptions. The east end commemorates John Slagg, who died on February 25th, 1875. The center panel on the north side, now worn and partly legible, is for Thomas, the infant son of John Slagg. The west end is dedicated to Jane, the wife of John Slagg, who died in 1886. On the south side, there are two panels for William, the youngest son who died in 1875 at the age of 34, and Edith, the wife of William, who died in 1918.
