Description

Swan Lane Mill Number 3 is a former cotton spinning mill built in 1914, designed by Stott of Oldham. The mill is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a multi-ridge slate roof. It has six storeys plus a double attic and measures 23 by 14 bays. The exterior includes segmentally headed windows, a cornice above the sixth storey, and an arcaded attic storey with round windows in the upper attic. The building has rounded corners, with the south-west angle housing the entrance that leads to a staircase rising several storeys in a straight flight. A tower above the staircase is corbelled out above the fifth storey and features a lunette and angle pinnacles. The south-east curved angle is also corbelled out above the ground floor. Carved swans project from the cornice at intervals, and a swan in low relief is located above the main entrance at the south-west angle. There are two-storey extensions, either for the card room or as warehousing, canted across the eastern elevation and along the south side, which is faced in white glazed brick. A taking-in door is present on the eastern elevation. An engine house projects to the north-west, consisting of two by three bays with round arched windows, and a chimney beyond the engine house is enriched with a swan emblem in white brick. The interior has not been inspected.
