Description

Hough's Bridge is a road bridge over the Bridgewater Canal, built around 1770 by James Brindley for the Duke of Bridgewater. It is constructed of brown brick with stone dressings. The bridge features a deep segmental arch with sandstone springers and a projecting band above the brick voussoirs. The abutments are curved in plan and battered in section, and there are flush sandstone copings on the parapets. The base and kerb of the towpath under the bridge have been replaced with concrete. Additionally, there is a pipe bridge built against the east side of the abutments, which is not included in this listing.
