Description
The Chester City War Memorial, dedicated to those who died in both World Wars, was built in 1922 by Frederick H Crossley. It features a red sandstone stepped base, plinth, and a hexagonal cross. The fourth step of the base is inscribed with a dedication that reads: "ERECTED BY A GRATEFUL CITY/IN HONOUR OF HER SONS/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/THEIR COUNTRY IN THE/GREAT WAR 1914/1918/THEIR NAMES ARE ENGRAVED/ON TABLETS OF BRONZE IN/THE TOWN HALL AND/THEIR/IMPERISHABLE MEMORY/IN THE HEARTS THEIR/FELLOW CITIZENS." The west side of the third step bears the inscription "1939/1945." On the plinth of the cross, niches hold the figures of St Michael, St Alban, St George, St Werbergh, St Maurice, and St David.
