Description

29 and 31 St Werburgh Street are two shops built between 1895 and 1896 by architect John Douglas for Mr. Chapman and Mr. Densem. The buildings feature brick-nogged timber framing, brown brick, and tile-hanging, topped with a brown tile roof.

No. 29 is three stories tall, while No. 31 is two stories. Both have modern shopfronts that lack historical interest. The second story of No. 29 has a small-framed window with a 2;3;2 light casement and two transoms, along with a casement of five 1-pane lights. No. 31 features a similar 2;3;2 light casement with two transoms. The third story of No. 29 includes an oriel window with a coved apron and a lean-to roof set within a gable of banded tile-hanging. The main roof slopes down to the eaves above the central second-story casement. The timber framing above the west window of No. 31 includes quadrant and curved braces.

On the east face facing Godstall Lane, there is a corbelled shaped stack that is now truncated at the eaves. Each story has one casement window: the first story has three 3-pane lights under a moulded segmental arch, the second has a similar window with five lights, and the third features three lights with moulded brick mullions under a gable with fishscale tile hanging. A replaced door is set in a yellow sandstone case.

The west side has a timber-framed upper story with a small partly leaded light next to the corner post and a 5-light mullioned casement with two transoms under a cove-jettied gable that is also hung with fishscale tiles. This building was designed to complement, but is simpler than, Nos. 15-27 (odd) St Werburgh Street. The interiors of the shops are covered, and the upper stories were not inspected.
