Description
Numbers 36 and 38 on Northgate Street in Chester are two shops that were originally a shop or shops and a town house, dated 1834, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brown brick, featuring Flemish bond on the front and English garden wall bond at the rear. It has a double-pile slate roof with ridge lines that run parallel to the street.
The ground floor has two modern shopfronts, while the first floor showcases three recessed sash windows, each with 6 over 9 panes, set beneath gauged brick heads. The second floor contains three 6 over 6 pane sash windows beneath a flush band of painted stone. A painted stone cornice adds to the architectural detail. The rear elevation, which is partially obscured by No. 34 Northgate Street, has one window on each upper storey. The interior has been altered but still retains some original features. This building is part of a group with Nos 32 and 34 Northgate Street.
