Description
The Equestrian Statue of Hugh Lupus, 1st Earl of Chester, is a Grade II* listed statue created between 1870 and 1879 by the artist G F Watts for the 3rd Marquis and 1st Duke of Westminster. This bronze statue is situated on a battered plinth made of buff stone at the center of a pond. It depicts Hugh Lupus, the first Norman Earl of Chester, who is shown seated on a horse. The horse was specifically bred for this statue, resulting from a Percheron mare and an English thoroughbred stallion. Both the sculptor and the client aimed for historical accuracy in every detail, and they regarded this statue as Watts's masterpiece, according to Gervas Huxley.
