Description

No. 265 on Chester Road is a cottage dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed from sandstone and brick, with a painted finish and features corrugated iron over thatch. The building has one storey plus an attic. There are two windows, with a replaced door and iron lattice casements from the mid-19th century, one on each side of the door and two in the dormers. The right gable end is made of stone and has a plinth with two upper windows: one is a two-light window with a flush chamfered mullion (with one light blocked), and the other is a one-light window in a square chamfered opening, containing a horizontal sliding sash. There is a flush brick chimney on each gable.

Inside, the cottage consists of two rooms and a later outshut at the back. It features broad-board oak doors and oak cupboards of 17th-century style on either side of the chimney breast in the right room. There is a winder stair behind the rear cupboard, as there were originally two stairs, with the one in the left room removed. The interior also includes chamfered oak beams, sawn oak joists, and an oak-framed partition wall visible in the bedrooms. An oak truss indicates that the roof originally had a very steep pitch.
