Description
The Hollies is a house with origins in the early 18th century, though it was extended and remodelled around 1840. The house is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond, with some yellow headers, and has a Welsh slate roof and two brick chimneys. It has an L-shaped plan. The west front is two stories high and has four bays. A cast-iron verandah with quatrefoil detailing and a continuous railing, including a central gateway, extends across the front of the three bays to the left. The central two bays feature pairs of deep casement doors. The tripartite window in the right-hand end bay, and the other windows, are 12-pane sashes with wedged stone lintels and sills. The south front has two cross iron windows with rectangular leaded glazing, while the north front retains early 18th-century brickwork.
Inside, the entrance opens into a long passage containing a simple staircase with plain balusters, a mahogany handrail, and a bracketed open string. The interior features simple moulded doorcases, four-panelled doors, and added plate racks. Three rooms face the garden, with the central room of particular interest, featuring a panelled dado decorated with art nouveau-style foliage. It also contains a late 19th-century classical frieze of medallions, cherubs, and scrollwork. Doorcases and fireplaces have added classical pediments. Panelled shutters are fitted to the long casements. A late 18th or early 19th century cast-iron range is located in the scullery.
