Description
This is a monument located about 20 yards north of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Winsford, commemorating those who died in the fire at Over Cotton Mill in 1874. The monument is made of yellow sandstone ashlar and features a square plinth with a chamfered edge, a moulded base also with a chamfered edge, and a slightly tapering square body. At the top, there is an octagonal section with gables and a cross at the center.
The east face of the monument has an inscription that reads: "THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE INSCRIBED AND WHO LOST THEIR LIVES BY THE FIRE WHICH OCCURRED AT THE OVER COTTON MILL ON THE TWENTY-SEVENTH DAY OF OCTOBER IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR 'AND WHAT I SAY UNTO YOU I SAY UNTO ALL. WATCH.' St Mark 13.37."
On the sides of the monument, there are four names inscribed of those who perished, with the oldest being thirty-four years old and the youngest just three months old.
