Description
This description covers a section of the medieval City Wall in Chester, dating from the late 11th century to the early 12th century. The wall was converted into a promenade between 1702 and 1708 and has undergone repairs and alterations at various times, particularly at the northern end where it was modified to accommodate the Holyhead Railway in the mid-19th century. The wall is constructed from coursed red sandstone rubble, with the outer face standing approximately 18 courses high and featuring buttresses of uncertain age. The ground level inside the wall is nearly level with the pavement, which was once the wall walk, but there is some exposed stonework visible towards the Watergate to the south and Bonewaldesthorne Tower to the north.
