Description
The ice house, built around 1758, features a 19th-century ante-chamber. It is primarily constructed of local brick, while the ante-chamber is made of coursed sandstone. The main chamber has a double-skin wall with a drain that contains a ceramic pipe and an opening at the top. The entrance passage is badly damaged and has a largely destroyed barrel vault, also double-skin, leading to an elliptically-arched entrance into the main chamber. The ante-chamber connects to the entrance passage at an angle of almost 90 degrees and is clearly a later addition. It seems to have been used for food preparation before items were stored in the ice house, which is an unusual feature. The ante-chamber has a barrel vault, preparation benches on each side, a separate drain, and two wall recesses with dressed surrounds.
