Description
The sundial at the rear of Crewe Hall dates from the early 19th century and is made of stone, iron, and bronze. It features a triangular stone base with cavetto moulding and slightly concave sides. This base supports three inverted consoles adorned with bearded heads in the internal angles. The brackets encase a cluster of leaves, from which a tapering twisted column rises, embellished with small spheres in the flutings. At the top, this column supports a Corinthian cap, which holds a shaped iron stem featuring three large bronze angled rings, as well as two smaller cross-braced rings at either end of a slender rod.
