Description

This building is a works building located in the northwest corner of The Barracks in Macclesfield. It was constructed between 1855 and 1865 as part of the militia barracks and has since been converted into a house in the 1980s. The structure is made of roughly coursed and squared sandstone rubble, featuring an ashlar ridge stack and a plain tiled roof that is hipped to the left. It is designed in the Tudorbethan Revival style and has a double-depth plan.

The exterior is single storey with an attic and consists of a two-window range, with a single-storey entrance bay to the left. The front is asymmetrical, highlighted by a large, coped gable that is set forward to the right. The windows have been renewed and are topped with polychrome segmental relieving arches. The ground floor features mullioned windows, and there is a steep gabled half-dormer above. The entrance is located in the single-storey range to the left, characterized by a depressed two-centre arched doorway, with a swept dormer in the roof above. The building also has metal casement windows, and the workshop range to the left of the doorway was enlarged in the 20th century.

The interior has not been inspected. This building was erected as part of the barracks for the new county militia following the Militia Act of 1852. Macclesfield is notable for being one of the largest and most picturesque militia barracks, showcasing a richly detailed architectural design.
