Description

Number 1 to 4 and the Lodge, The Barracks, are militia barracks built around 1860, now converted into flats since the 1980s. The buildings are constructed from coursed and squared sandstone rubble with decorative polychromatic dressings, featuring rubble ridge and gable stacks, and a plain tiled roof. They are designed in a Picturesque Tudorbethan Revival style and form part of one side of the former parade square with a double-depth plan.

The exterior is one-and-a-half storeys high and consists of a six-window range. It has an asymmetrical layout with a left-of-centre entrance, paired gables on the right, an asymmetrical single gable on the left, and three gabled half dormers in between. There is a right-facing lower gable at the end and an octagonal single-storey tower with a pointed roof in the re-entrant. The entrance features shallow polychromatic relieving arches over a segmental-arched doorway with a carved tympanum. The windows include two- and three-light mullion windows with metal casements, as well as a four-light canted bay on the right-hand gable. The rear elevation is similar in design.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, these barracks were built as part of the new county militia following the Militia Reform Act of 1852, intended to provide secure storage for equipment, an armoury, a drilling ground, and non-commissioned officer barracks. They may have also served as an officers' mess. Macclesfield's barracks are noted for being one of the largest and most picturesque, showcasing rich architectural detail and invention.
