Description
The Cave is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, constructed of colourwashed brick with a stone slate roof and stone dressings. The entrance front features three bays arranged symmetrically. It has a stone plinth and a central front door with a stone surround and a six-panel door. On either side of the door are 20th-century horned sash windows, each with three rows of four panes and Gothick interlacing glazing bars at the top. The first floor has similar windows on the right and left, with a central window that has a lugged stone surround and a cavetto moulding above it. At the top, there is a central pedimented gable containing a circular panel with a stone surround. In front of the ground floor, there is a 20th-century trellis walkway with iron trellis panels supporting a flat roof adorned with acroteria. To either side of the entrance are square 20th-century pavilions, which feature similar Gothick windows and pyramidal roofs topped with domed square velcro skylights. The rear of the house resembles the entrance front but has the trellis porch limited to the central bay. The rear of the two pavilion wings are designed as Gothick conservatories.
