Description
The Black Bear Inn, dated 1634, is a Grade II* listed building located on the north side of High Street. It features a timber frame with painted brick nogging, where the ground storey is bricked-in and designed to resemble timber framing. The building has two storeys and two gables with restored barge-boards. The gable above the doorway includes a casement window with moulded wood mullions and a transom, along with renewed leaded lights. Other windows and doorways have been restored in a similar style. The inn has a thatched roof, and a beam over the entrance is carved with the initials NRK and the date. Although the interior has been altered, it still retains exposed ceiling beams and framing timbers. There is also a later two-storey wing attached to the left side, which was likely originally three cottages, designed to mimic timber framing and featuring a tiled roof.
