Description
The Guide Post, located 36 metres southeast of the Church lych gate in Poynton-with-Worth, is a lamp standard, guide post, and fountain combined, dated 1897. It features a cast-iron chamfered square base on a moulded plinth, which has moulded panels surrounding lion's mask fountains on three sides and a plaque on the fourth side. The fountains empty into square and semi-circular basins, designed for humans, horses, and dogs respectively. Above the base, a moulded cornice supports four horizontal consoles and a fluted column adorned with clasping acanthus leaves at the bottom. The column has four directional plates and originally supported four gas lamps, three of which still remain, mounted on curving brackets with some scroll work. This piece was made by Wilson and Co. in Manchester for £212. The plaque commemorates its erection in celebration of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee by the residents of Poynton. The guide post was moved to its current location around 2011.
