Description
The conservatory at the west end of Corporation Park was built in 1902 by W Richardson and Co from Darlington. Its principal elevation faces southeast and features a central rectangular house with a gabled roof and a clock in the pediment. The structure has a regular-coursed stone plinth, while the rest is made of glass and iron, richly decorated with arches, pierced spandrels, and columns. At the top, there is a central tapering octagonal ventilator with an ogee dome and a flagpole, situated above an ogee-arcaded belfry. The conservatory is flanked by lower wings that have polygonal ends, iron cresting, and flying veranda roofs. This building is a notable example of the late-Victorian conservatory style.
