Description
This is an early 20th-century sewer gas lamp. The lamp features a fluted cast iron standard with a curved glass lantern. The lantern is held up by four decorative brackets and includes a high valve at the domed canopy. At the top, there is a ladder rest that also supports the hinged top of the hood when it is opened for cleaning or maintenance. The cast-iron base plate is inscribed with 'J.E.WEBBS PATENT SEWER GAS DESTRUCTOR' and 'WEBB LAMP Co. LIMITED BIRMINGHAM'. The lantern head is marked with the name 'SUGG'.
