Description

This listing describes two terraces of houses located at 1-13 Brock Street and 2-8 Dibley Street in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. They were built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and White, Young and Partners as the structural engineer. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction.

The houses are constructed from pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring blue metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins. Most of the buildings are two storeys high, except for Nos. 7 and 9 Brock Street, which are single-storey units designed for pensioners or disabled individuals. The design includes deep eaves and projecting porches made of brick and green timber for Nos. 1-5, 11, and 13 Brock Street, along with blue timber surrounding the first-floor strip windows. The rear of the houses has blue weatherboarding, where they adjoin Dibley Square. The windows are timber with aluminium opening lights, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood.

The front fences are made of green timber on brick plinths and are an integral part of the overall design. The interiors have not been inspected. For historical context and sources, refer to Nos. 1-75 Dunn Terrace.
