Description

This listing describes two sets of paired terraces that form the north and west sides of Gordon Square and Dibley Square in Byker. Built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners, the buildings are constructed from pale metric modular brick on a timber frame. Nos. 5 and 6 Gordon Square feature brown weatherboarding, while the upper storeys of nos. 2-4 have the same treatment. The rear of nos. 7-11 Gordon Square and nos. 1-5 Dibley Square are clad in blue weatherboarding. The roofs are made of blue metal and are supported by plywood box beam purlins.

The terraces are two storeys high and have brown projecting porches, which are also found at nos. 7-11 Gordon Square and nos. 4-6 Gordon Road, all topped with blue metal roofs. Other houses have metal hoods. The windows are timber with aluminium opening lights, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been renewed in hardwood. The layout of the square is distinctive to the Gordon Road development.

Additionally, there are two sets of garages located west of nos. 4 and 5 Dibley Square. These rectangular brick structures have lean-to roofs and each set contains five individual garages, most of which retain their original garage doors.
