Description
This listing describes a group of terraced houses and pensioners' bungalows located at 12-18 Brock Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The buildings are constructed from pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring dark green weatherboarding on Nos. 2 and 7 Brinkburn Square. The roofs are made of blue metal and are supported by plywood box beam purlins.
The layout includes single-storey buildings at Nos. 3 and 4 Brinkburn Square, while the others are two storeys high. Nos. 1, 2, and 9 have plastic door hoods, while Nos. 5-8 feature projecting porches made of green weatherboarding beneath blue catslide roofs. The rear eaves of Nos. 12-18 Brock Street are adorned with yellow weatherboarding, which is a rare color choice, complemented by green, white, and red below, and raised attics at either end of the terrace. The windows are timber with aluminium opening lights, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood. Although the interiors were not inspected, they are not considered to be of special interest. This group of buildings forms a square and reflects the distinctive style of the Gordon Road neighborhood.
