Description

The Norton Memorial Cross is a memorial cross designed by the architectural practice of Brierley and Rutherford from York. It is located in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building, positioned immediately to the south-east of the church's south porch.

The memorial features a tall stone cross with a hooded crucifix at the top, depicting the clothed figure of Christ crucified. This cross head is supported by a moulded collar on the octagonal cross shaft. The shaft itself stands on a tapering square plinth, which is elevated on a three-stepped circular base.

The main dedicatory inscription is incised on the front face of the plinth, stating: "TO THE UNDYING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTON WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO THE DEATH THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED IN THE CHURCH." Additionally, there is a later inscription on a second face that reads: "REMEMBER ALSO THOSE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945."
