Description

The Hermitage is a former grammar school situated on the north side of Norton The Green, facing the old line of Mill Lane. It is believed to have medieval origins and was supposedly a residence for the canons of St Mary's Church, which was collegiate. The building features a fine vaulted collar, although the ground floor is likely from the 17th century. Most of the structure dates from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The building is two storeys tall with three windows, and it includes a later single-storey schoolroom wing with three windows. The ground floor of the main building is constructed of ashlar stone, with roughcast above, and it has a brick modillion cornice above the ground floor. The windows are later glazed sash windows, with glazing bars in the wing. The west gable end has a blocked mullion window. The roof is pantiled and hipped to the west, featuring a large central stack. The schoolroom wing has a fall hipped pantiled roof. Additionally, there is a two-storey, one-window extension to the north, which is gabled and has kneelers.
