Description

Newton Hall is a mansion dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of chevron-dressed sandstone with Westmorland slate roofs laid in diminishing courses, featuring stone gable and ridge copings, and four chimney stacks at the gables. The building comprises a central rectangular block flanked by lower wings. The two-storey central block has three bays. Canted, stone-aproned, two-storey bay windows with timber sash windows and glazing bars are located to the left and right. A Tuscan portico with pilasters and an entablature including a narrow cornice occupies the centre, leading to a part-glazed door with glazing bars, a rectangular fanlight with geometrically patterned glazing bars, and a moulded stone architrave. A sash window with glazing bars sits above the portico. A moulded cornice is below a shallow parapet on the front (south) elevation. The wings each have one bay with glazing-bar-lights, with a lower central section designed as a horizontal sash. Painted sills and keystones are present. A simple fixed-light Venetian staircase window is positioned in the centre of the rear elevation of the central block.
